Oh yes, I knew what those were. Banana blossoms. So I looked up at this very tall banana tree...
and sure enough a banana bud!
It starts out as the purple bud, then the outer part curls back and falls off, and the blossoms are actually the tips of each banana.
The first photo was taken in July. Wade kept asking when we should pick the bananas. I thought when the top one just start to turn yellow. But then we didn't want them to turn bad before we could harvest them. It's so hard to notice them being up so high. So we really had to make a point to go check on them once in awhile. Well the tree was starting to lean, and it was getting a little cooler out. Once the bananas are done the tree dies and you have to cut it down. We thought we might as well pick them while we had the taller ladder and before we lost them.
That's so awesome! I would love to live in a climate that let me grow bananas and/or avocados. Send me some yummy banana bread, k? I like mine w/out walnuts cuz I'm allergic. ;)
ReplyDeleteOooh lucky you to have all those bananas. Mmm cream pie, bread, milkshakes, pudding. I love bananas :) Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteThat is too cool! Thanks for sharing! Living in Ohio I never get to see that kind of thing.:)
ReplyDeleteI've never seen a banana tree before. Is it in your yard? It looks like it grows really tall. The bananas looked wonderful!
ReplyDeleteI've never seen that, its actually such a beautiful thing!
ReplyDeleteYou actually plant all those banana trees! Unbelievable! It's good that you can enjoy whenever there's banana. Then you should have plant pineapple as well. Or should I send you some rambutans' seeds or guava seeds..... haha... Sounds great, isn't it! hahaha....
ReplyDeleteoh wow i want a banana tree in my yard enjoy
ReplyDeleteRobyn: ok, I don't use nuts in my banana bread. I do love it when co-workers and friends bring all the extra Avos that they can't handle. Mmmm...
ReplyDeleteMichelle: Mmmm lots of good ideas for my bananas!
Laura and Teresa and HH: It is so fun to watch
them grow, and they grow upward not down (the bunch that is)!
Kristy: Oh yay! send me some seeds! I already have in my yard pineapple, mango and papaya.
Rebecca: I have probably four different kinds of bananas in my yard. They come in all shapes and sizes!
How wonderful to have your own banana tree! Thanks for your comment on my macaroon post. My husband remembers the Banket (they called it an almond pastry ring). Also a family favorite! Have a wonderful time in Michigan!
ReplyDeleteThanks Barbara! I will see if my I can make it with my mom this year and take some photos. I wish I could post about it before Christmas! In Grand Rapids this time of year you can get almond paste just about any way you want it and in any size. A little more dificult down here.

That is so great! I love the bananas! My son (age 5) will be so jealous. When we were in FL visiting my parents this summer all he could talk about was banana and coconut trees. He was dying to pick some. I'll have to show him your blog so he can see what to do if he ever gets to. Thanks for sharing this.
