Oven Roasted Chickpeas

Recently I've seen two blogs post about roasting chickpeas. They looked so good when I first saw Heavenly Housewife made some and posted her recipe on Donuts to Delirium. Then more recently Jaden Hair posted her version on her Steamy Kitchen blog.

So after I saw Heavenly housewife's I thought I'd give it a try, and you know me I have to put my own spin on it. I tried to make a teriyaki version, and....well it just didn't turn out. Then after seeing Jadens post I think I figured it out. The chickpeas had to be pretty dry first, and with the teriyaki it was just too liquid.
After opening and draining the can of beans rinse them well. I made sure to dry them with some paper towel when I layed them out.

Then spread them out on the stoneware bar pan, then drizzled on a little oil. I salted them a little. In a 400 degree oven roast for 30-40 minutes until nice and crispy. Watch them so they don't burn!

Once out of the oven I sprinkled on some sea salt and chipotle chili powder. You can find it at Penzey's Spices, or I have seen it at whole foods, I think McCormick even make has it. I have been so into this seasining lately. It gives it a nice spicy, smokey flavor without making it too hot. If you have a favotite curry powder you'd like to use this would be great too...or garam masala.

A warning though...they are addictive! At least it's a nice healthy snack!

  1. Hi Lyndsey,
I've made these before too. They were really good but the one thing I didn't like is how much they shrink up. We had them finished before they even made it to snack bowls - guess I need to start buying chick peas in bulk.
Hope your first day of school went well and hope you have a wonderful birthday this week :-)

  2. I must be living a sheltered life because I never heard of this before. Looks very enticing.

  3. Hi Lyndsey! Mmm, I love these! I've been eating them since I was a kid. In Greece and in some Mediterranean countries you can buy them at the store, hot roasted, crunchy and flavored with salt. I've been so used to buying them all ready cooked, that I never thought they could be made at home. How silly of me! Thanks for letting me know otherwise. Now I'll have to make some. And... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!

  4. Wonderful recipe! Incidentally, roasted chickpeas are all the rage in Macedonia (ex Yugoslavian republic), they roast them at every corner, like popcorn, and people there love to eat them as a snack. Anyway, chickpea is a very good and healthy grain and we love it.

  6. Lyndz, this is my hubby's favourite snack. hehe... I am lucky cause we can easily buy this kind of tibits anywhere over here and it's also very cheap. Or maybe I'll try making my own one day too! Just to have fun. Yours looks pretty successful and crunchy as well. So, you ended up making how many kilos of these? haha... You will never had enough! Have a lovely day.
    Cheers, kristy

  7. Lyndsey...thank you soooo much for experimenting with this. I'm always looking for new ways to eat my legumes. Chickpeas are always nearby and you just inspired me to do a twist of my own too ;o)
The tip for drying the chickpeas is a critical piece of info. Thanks for saving me time to figure that out.

    Ciao for now,
    Claudia

  9. Thanks Martha! Happy birthday to you too! I know they did shrink and it sure made it easy to eat a whole can by yourself! :P

I.M. You'll have to try it now! It's too easy not to!

Ana, thank you for the birthday wish! How cool to buy them hot and crunchy! It is so easy to make your own but....

Κάθαρσις I'm glad you like it, but how cool to be able to get these on every corner! Great snack!

Diane, it really is easy, but they don't last long!

Kristy, Yes it's very cheap to make them and we can't get them already made like we can get plantain chips. At least they are cheap and easy to make. I think I need to buy them in bulk though...a really large can!!

Claudia, you're welcome. I want to experiment with a few more flavors too. Maybe if I roast them a little first then add the teriyaki flavors to it hummmmm...

Pam it is so easy...and if you don't like it you are not out much at all!

Jennifurla, You got it! easy peasy! and cheap too!

  10. Oh thanks for posting this. I made some a while back (can't even remember where I first saw them) but they didn't turn out like I had hoped. I'm definitely going to give it a try again since you had success. :)

  16. Thanks for the mention daaahling, you did a fab job with these. Yes, you are right about them having to be pretty dry. I guess you can set them on some paper towels for like an hour or so, that might help. I love it how they are so customizeable.

  17. Susan B - yes you should try them again, make sure you dry them (you can do it with some paper towel) and it's cheap enough!

marthaandme - can't wait to see what you come up with!

Sam - thanks, it's really easy and inexpensive. I like all the different flavors that you can use!

Jeannie - We can't get them in ready to eat packages like we can Plantain chips! What's your favorite flavor?

Mary - You should, they are cheap and easy! Can't wait to see what you come up with!

Bonnie - You really should try, even if they don't turn out you are out only a can of beans! It helped to dry them out first!

HH - no problem! I'm glad to mention you. You share so many wonderful things on your blog! I love it!!
