Quinoa, and Brown Rice Dosa

I am very fond of dosa, and since my family likes it and it's healthy, I like to make it often...what better way to get grains in their diet. Dosa make a good breakfast and we also like it for lunch, it is plenty satisfying. Plus I am having fun with wraps and crepes and such...hmmm, maybe I should make a new chapter in my blog hehe!
  • 1 cup brown rice
  • 1 cup Quinoa
  • 1/2 cup urad dal
  • 1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds
  • handful of cilantro
  • sea salt to taste


Wash and soak brown rice and quinoa in different bowls for about 6 to 8 hours, soak fenugreek seed with one of them. Later grind them together into a fine paste. Add some water to dilute it and make into batter of pouring consistency. Add salt as required and mix well. Set aside, add the chopped cilantro right before cooking.  Note: This batter doesn’t require to be fermented. The batter can be used immediately for making dosas after you prepared it.
Heat a non-stick pan. Take a ladleful of batter, drop in the center of the pan and quickly spread into a thin circle. Pour little oil around the dosa and allow cooking. Later flip it over and allow cooking on the other side too. Finally transfer to a serving plate.
Serve it with any chutney of your choice.


I like a dosa that is crispy like this one is.
I have not made any chutney yet, but would like to make a coconut chutney soon. I filled it with potato masala, and this is so filling, and yummy! Greek yogurt makes it a complete treat! It is a plus that my daughter loves it.

  1. Interesting recipe, the quinoa that I have discovered here in France is mixed with bulgar but I am sure it would work the same way. Will give it a try, thanks for this recipe. Diane

    1. I'm sure it would be good with bulgar, they make dosa out of many grains and seeds. Good luck! :)

  2. I love dosa too but they are so easily available here so usually we just pop into the nearest indian restaurant for some...love it with dhal curry and coconut chutney. yum!

  4. I love using quinoa in cakes and this is indeed healthy and welcoming - wonderful to wake up or go to have a sliver late at night with my book. The parting photo makes me yearn.

  6. It looks really good, Lyndsey! I made quinoa with blueberries over the weekend and want to try this one! It is really chilly and raining here today so that last pic looks fabulous to me. I see on your sidebar it is 81 by you, it's 50 here. I love Sarasota and wish I were there on the beach!!! You take it easy and I hope the remaining days of school are a breeze for you!!!

    1. I think the weather gadget is stuck on 81, but we have been having pretty steady weather, not much going on, just high in the low 80s and lows in the low 70s. same ol' same ol'. You're more than welcome to come down for a visit and enjopy this beach. It so close and waiting for you! :D

  7. Yum, you added potato masala? That sounds perfect. You are very creative making a recipe. I'm not so creative like you. Coconut chutney sounds amazing. I look forward to that one! :-)

  8. we call it 'thosai' here in malaysia. It's very common but i'm not sure what they are made of cos i've never made them before. I'm also still crazy about wraps like you. today is friday, so i think you're already now getting ready for your break? enjoy it!

    1. Yes it's Friday, thank goodness. The students have one more day...so rediculous they have to come to school on Monday! We have to come in Tuesday, get things all tied up for the summer. I can't wait!!

  9. Dosa / Thosai / Potayto / Potahto .... That looks really good! I love these things but it sounds like just too much work for me to attempt. Besides, we have Indian restaurants at nearly every corner so a good dosa is just a short drive away .... lucky me! And I do agree, some greek yogurt goes so well with it ... oh, I'm getting seriously hungry for one right now!

    1. Ha! You are right, whatever you call it, it's good and all the same to me! :D You are lucky....we are getting more Indian restaurants popping up. Burt we can get a Cuban sandwich just about everywhere, or real authentic Mexican tacos. So if I want dosa I have to make it, really the most work is getting out the food processor...

  12. I love dosa! I've tried making them before with mung dal and rice, really liked it! quinoa is a new one for me but I do like its nutty flavour so I hope to try this soon! It sounds absolutely yummy with potato masala, not even missing the chutney at all.

    I eat dosa quite often here but never had healthy version like yours. What a great idea to use brown rice and quinoa! It looks quite simple to make too. I never use quino before but I have to give it a try some day when I am in the mood for healthy Indian food,
